Video ethnography

Chapter 3.19 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 358-360 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Video ethnography, an increasingly popular qualitative research method in the study of Strategy-as-Practice (SAP), utilises video (audiovisual) recordings to observe, document, and analyse the practices of actors engaged in strategy work. This approach is a subset of ethnography, visual methods, and visual ethnography. Unlike broader methods, video ethnography typically involves specific observation and recording techniques and particular approaches to analysis and interpretation. First, it captures detailed, real-time information about social interactions, behaviours, and practices of strategy work in natural settings, allowing researchers to notice minute details that might escape initial observation. Second, researchers analyse the video-recorded footage to gain insights into the interactional dynamics of those engaged in strategy work. This analysis often includes multiple reviews of the footage to grasp the nuances and complexities of the observed behaviours and interactions.
