Chapter 4.5 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 380-382 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: As organizations increasingly create positions for Chief Strategy Officers (CSOs), the study of these practitioners becomes particularly relevant for the Strategy-as-Practice (SAP) literature. SAP, which focuses on the activities, processes, and actors involved in strategizing, considers the role of the CSO to be an intriguing subject of study. CSOs are often viewed as senior executives who support their organizations to face the market's complexity and uncertainty through information processing and the execution of strategic tasks. Research on CSOs has examined their responsibilities, exploring the different roles and subjectivities they embody within organizations. A further understanding about these actors is important for the Strategy-as-Practice literature, as CSOs are becoming increasingly prolific and influential within organizations and strategy-making in particular. The growing interest in the CSO aligns with the third P of the 3 P's SAP Framework: Practitioners.
