Chapter 4.6 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 383-386 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Climate change presents one of the most critical challenges for modern society and has moved up the corporate agenda significantly in recent years. Today many board members, top management teams and strategic decision-makers at for-profit and non-profit organizations need to take into account and respond to pressures around climate change mitigation. This opens up avenues for studying how organizations and strategists are affected by and influence industry-wide shifts to adapt to or even mitigate climate change. This entry introduces the phenomenon of climate change as an important topic of research for Strategy as Practice (SAP). The entry further reviews existing studies in the spirit of SAP and their contribution to our understanding of the escalating ecological crisis. The article ends with proposing a research agenda for SAP on climate change and outlines how this research will enable SAP to extend its theoretical, conceptual and methodological apparatus.
