Competition

Rebecca Bednarek

Chapter 4.7 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 387-390 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Strategy-as-Practice (SAP) has often defined practices unfolding within an organisation as strategic to the extent they are consequential for a firm's competitive advantage. Competition has been one way that SAP has shown the consequentiality of practices unfolding within an organisation for its strategy. While SAP research has rarely directly studied the phenomenon of competing, some SAP studies have more explicitly framed specific actions taken internally within a firm as competitive. Five themes characterise SAP studies of competition that differentiate it from other strands of strategy literature. These include expanding our understanding of the activities and actors that explain competition and enact the competitive environment, including the role of more relational dynamics between competitors and the processual flux of those dynamics. Given the still nascent nature of SAP research into competition, each of these areas are also important for future research.
