Chapter 4.8 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Strategy as Practice, 2025, pp 391-393 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The term “consultants” is used to represent actors who provide expert advice and support to their clients on various topics ranging from operations, finance and marketing to strategy. Consultancy is the related term used to represent their sector. The clients of consultants can be individuals, for profit and non-profit organizations, and governments. When engaging in an organization, consultants can either be employees of the firm (often termed as internal consultants or corporate strategists) or hired into the firm for a particular duration to provide support for initiatives and processes (often termed as external consultants or strategy consultants).
