Corporate political strategizing

Abstract:
Corporate political strategy is an important domain of an organization's strategic management, and is thus of particular interest to Strategy as Practice. The term ‘corporate political strategy’ is used as an umbrella term for the variety of strategies that organizations deploy to manage the political environment in ways favorable to their corporate interests. The political environment is a part of the larger non-market environment where organizations operate, which includes political actors (such as regulators, legislators, and members of the executive and judicial branches of government), as well as civil society (e.g., media, social movements, and non-governmental organizations). In this entry, I explain the focus of extant research on corporate political strategy, in which this domain has been typically portrayed as confined to top management, concealed, and secretive. Next, I discuss recent research from an SAP perspective that has unpacked the ‘doing’ of corporate political strategizing within an organization. Finally, I delineate future research avenues to inspire the further exploration and better understanding of corporate political strategizing from an SAP approach.
