Women and the drug trade in conflict
Orly Maya Stern ()
Chapter 5 in Women and War Economies, 2025, pp 86-103 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Chapter 5 looks at the drug trade in conflict. It starts by describing how drugs have been used in armed conflicts through the years. It examines the drug trade in conflict, exploring how armed and warring actors have been involved in this trade, and the part this trade has played in fuelling and funding conflict. The chapter then looks at women's involvement in the drug trade generally (including in peacetime). Given the dearth of writing on women and the drug trade in conflict, the chapter explores this topic through an assessment of two cases, one on women's involvement in coca cultivation in Colombia, and another on women and Afghanistan's poppy trade, to see what these cases teach us about women and the drug trade in conflict, and as part of war economies.
