Abstract: Chapter 7 looks at kidnapping for ransom, describing the thriving kidnapping for ransom industry in many conflict zones, the significant parts that armed actors play in this trade as part of war economies, and how organisations designated as terror groups fall into this picture. The chapter then looks at women's roles as actors, perpetrators, and collaborators in kidnapping operations, including in maritime piracy, in which kidnapping for ransom forms a key part. Finally, the chapter looks at women's experiences as kidnap for ransom victims, considering how these differ from men’s.
