Women in agritourism
Carla Barbieri
Chapter 5 in Rethinking Agritourism, 2026, pp 63-79 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Women play a central role in the development, management, and innovation of agritourism, largely due to their historical contribution to the economic survival and social wellbeing of the farm household. This chapter adopts a gendered lens to describe the intertwined elements that contribute to the success of women in agritourism and the resulting empowerment across various dimensions. Framed with the Agritourism System, this chapter then delves into the set of personal, family, and societal factors—many of which stem from patriarchal agricultural systems—that hinder the chances of women's success in agriculture and agritourism. After outlining the set of personal and contextual factors that women in agritourism identify as enablers of their entrepreneurial success, this chapter concludes by offering actionable insights for interventions to support the development and long-term success of women in agritourism.
