The impact of flexible working arrangements: the conceptualisation and operationalisation of flexible bundles

Argyro Avgoustaki

Chapter 3 in A Research Agenda for Flexible Working Arrangements, 2025, pp 35-54 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Much research has studied how flexible working arrangements (FWAs) are linked to different outcomes at the individual or firm level of analysis. However, certain areas within this literature remain underdeveloped. Specifically, there is insufficient attention to understanding how FWA bundles, as opposed to individual FWAs, are linked to outcomes at the employee or firm levels. This chapter draws from a range of studies, published since 2000 across different journals, to provide an overview of the current state of the literature on FWA bundles. It presents various typologies of FWA bundles along with different criteria for categorising bundles. It also explains how FWA bundles are conceptualised and operationalised, through examples from the literature. Finally, it identifies areas that require conceptual clarification and greater methodological consistency, thereby proposing directions for future research.
