Chapter 4 in A Research Agenda for Flexible Working Arrangements, 2025, pp 55-68 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Work–life flexibility policies (WLFP) research reports mixed results for employee and organisational outcomes. To address these gaps, our chapter examines how WLFP can be conceptualised as different types (location, size, temporal, permeability, continuity) and extent (intensity, bundled) of control over the work role boundary to motivate a research agenda. Future research should examine how different ways of accessing and using WLFP relate to job control as a common theoretical foundation; consider how growing digitalisation changes the behavioural visibility of flexible working; and update theories and empirical research on work design, processes, and job inequality to better incorporate flexible working. Addressing these issues will enhance understanding of the shifting conceptualisations of flexibility and the organisational dynamics of an increasingly blended workforce to reflect the transformation of work in the remote and hybrid era.
