Child-parent violence

Hannah Sedlacek

Chapter 10 in Research Handbook on Violent Crime and Society, 2025, pp 155-169 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter covers child-parent violence (CPV), a salient yet often neglected form of family and domestic violence. The chapter will discuss the challenges in defining CPV, particularly in differentiating between abuse, developmentally typical child-parent discord and defensive reactions, and the necessity and consequences of these distinctions. The chapter will then present the prevalence and correlates of CPV, with notes on observed variation, followed by the most prominent theoretical explanations of CPV, focusing on socialization and learning and power and control dynamics and identifying the specific utility and potential gaps of each. Finally, this chapter will close with a discussion on avenues to better address CPV both in the community through the adoption of additional resources and within the justice system with the implementation and standardization of system policy and practice.
