Chapter 14 in Research Handbook on Violent Crime and Society, 2025, pp 224-241 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Indigenous people experience various forms of victimization, such as gender-based violence, at significant levels. They also experience unique forms of victimization, such as ‘going missing’ and historical oppression at high levels as well. This chapter discusses the role of historical oppression and colonization to Indigenous people, explaining how they may impact Indigenous people's vulnerability to violence today. We also discuss the risk factors that can influence violence against Native people, and identify culturally specific risk factors, such as rurality and jurisdictional complexities, that are uniquely relevant to Indigenous people. The consequences of victimization, including re-victimization, substance use, violence against others and mental health, are discussed, as is the unique risk that Native people experience for ‘going missing.’ We end the chapter by providing suggestions for solutions to curb violence against Indigenous people in the United States today.
