Abstract:
Gangs and gang violence has been a focus of academic research since the 1920s and remain the subject of much societal concern today. Gang violence not only directly impacts those who are gang-involved but also communities across the globe. In this chapter, we draw on the broad body of literature that explores the role of violence in the lives of gang members and the communities in which they reside to explore: the extent of gang violence in the United States and abroad, the ubiquitous role of violence in the phases of gang membership (e.g., joining, active membership and desistance), the causes and consequences of violence in the gang context, as well as current practices for addressing this form of violence. We close with recommendations to future researchers and practitioners.
