Chapter 12 in Handbook of Creative Regions, 2025, pp 224-240 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter reviews the existing literature on path dependence in the context of creative industries, arguing that this concept, central to evolutionary economic geography, is crucial to understanding their regional development. It criticizes the simplistic view of trajectory dependency that ignores the role of actors, institutions, and regional interdependence, advocating for an approach that incorporates agency, co-evolution, and place dependence. The analysis explores the mechanisms of trajectory dependence in creative industries, focusing on the related and unrelated variety of knowledge and the role of local and extra-regional actors, especially multinationals, in its development. Finally, it is concluded that the creative industries are not a panacea for regional development, and a more nuanced understanding of their mechanisms, including dependence on place, is required to design effective policies.
