Chapter 13 in Handbook of Creative Regions, 2025, pp 241-261 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter examines the transformation of Florianópolis (Brazil) from a territorial-based entrepreneurial-innovation ecosystem to a digital creativity-driven ecosystem. Once known as the “Magic Island”, Florianópolis faced geographical and institutional constraints that hindered traditional industrial development, sparking a technology-based entrepreneurial evolution. The narrative, crafted through historical research, highlights the convergence of technology, talent, and tolerance per Richard Florida's “creative class” theory, which is instrumental in this transition. The study underscores the interplay between business innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems, focusing on geographical proximity in fostering collaboration and innovation alongside the emerging significance of digital connectivity. It reveals how creative talent and digital technologies drive innovation, transcending geographical barriers and fostering global connections. This transformation illustrates Florianópolis's metamorphosis into a digital-based ecosystem, merging its rich heritage with modern technological advancements. The city emerges as an international hub highlighting the potential of creativity and technology to reshape economic landscapes and establish global outreach.
