Maria Ballesteros-Sola
Chapter 19 in Handbook of Teaching and Learning in Social Innovation, 2026, pp 287-302 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter, aimed at scholars and instructors, discusses the potential of the case method to enhance Social Innovation education as part of a dynamic portfolio of experiential learning-based pedagogies. It differentiates between research case studies and teaching cases, emphasizing the latter's role in applying theory to practice in real-life scenarios to address complex societal challenges. The chapter reviews the literature on the case method, noting both its strengths and criticisms, proposes a holistic framework for writing and teaching Social Innovation cases, and advocates for cases with broader representation and interdisciplinary approaches. It concludes with a call for additional research at the intersection of the case method pedagogy and Social Innovation.
