Chapter 26 in Handbook of Teaching and Learning in Social Innovation, 2026, pp 392-406 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Universities aim to advance teaching, research, and university outreach. The requirement to integrate university outreach into the curriculum of Brazilian undergraduate programs presents an opportunity to develop activities and projects that foster social innovation. This chapter examines the potential and challenges of social innovation as a means to integrate university outreach into the curriculum. A qualitative study was conducted within the undergraduate Business Administration program at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, focusing on both the Social Innovation and Co-creation Laboratory and the development of a social innovation course. The results highlight the potential for universities to engage more actively in social innovation, particularly in building collective knowledge and strengthening community ties. However, some challenges need to be overcome, particularly the lack of a solid theoretical basis, institutional support, temporal constraints of the teaching period, and the transdisciplinarity of social innovation.
