Teaching social innovation: a framework for competencies and learning approaches

Abstract:
With the increasing complexity and interconnectedness of many societal challenges, developing key competencies to tackle social issues has become essential. This study explores the alignment between learning approaches and the development of key competencies for social innovation. We identify critical competencies for fostering social innovation, such as empathy, ethical decision making, stakeholder engagement, advocacy, and strategic, sustainable thinking. Additionally, we analyze five primary learning approaches—Inquiry-based Learning, Experiential Learning, Service-based Learning, Project-based Learning, and Design Thinking—evaluating their effectiveness in cultivating these competencies. By aligning specific learning approaches with the competencies they best support, we aim to provide educators with a framework for designing curricula that not only communicate knowledge but also support competency development and the empowerment of students to become proactive agents of social change.
