Chapter 6 in Handbook of Teaching and Learning in Social Innovation, 2026, pp 101-119 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores how European higher education institutions foster social innovation to address societal challenges. Social innovation, aimed at tackling complex social issues, has gained prominence, with universities playing a key role in economic development and social equity. While innovation in higher education is well-studied, more research is needed on how higher education institutions are adapting their educational strategies to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and experiential learning, with the aim of effectively integrating social innovation education to respond to modern challenges. As part of the EU-funded European Social Innovation Campus project, this study analyzes empirical data from 28 interviews to examine how social innovation is integrated into education. It highlights diverse teaching strategies and their role in empowering individuals as agents of change. The findings offer valuable insights for students, educators, and policymakers, showcasing effective methods for embedding social innovation into curricula.
