 Sexual harassment, the university and the city: contesting socio-legal constructions of gendered spaces in IndiaAtreyee Sengupta Chapter 13 in Research Handbook on Gender, Violence and Law, 2026, pp 208-224 from Edward Elgar Publishing Abstract: The university as an institution is largely imagined to be a self-contained and self-sufficient space that is distinct from the social space around it. The university almost appears as a ‘black box’ (Latour 1987) that has little to do with the state or the community within which it is spatially located. But spaces, including the universities, remain deeply gendered and infused with spatial power hierarchies. In this chapter, I argue that to adequately understand the pervasive issue of sexual harassment within universities in India, we must see the space of the university and the city as in a continuum since that helps us identify how socio-legal constructions of the gendered space that perturb the social space of the city are equally reflective in the university. Through a critical reading of how the criminal and civil provisions against sexual harassment in India and the discourse on sexual harassment in universities in India produce and reproduce socio-legal constructions of gendered spaces in India, I illustrate this need to look at the gender violence in the space of the university and the city in a continuum.
