Growing opportunities for corruption in higher education

Abstract: With the immense expansion of higher education worldwide and its increasing diversification and complexity, the opportunities for corruption, over-commercialization, and other practices have expanded. Such issues as internationalization, new technologies, distance education and joint degrees, the knowledge distribution system (including “fake” or predatory journals, charging for publication, and related issues), the testing industry and scandals in many countries concerning test cheating, corruption in academic promotions, and others have emerged. Contemporary higher education is perhaps uniquely attractive to a variety of corrupt practices—all this in the context of a system that in general adheres to respect for academic values and ethics.
