Chapter 7 in Handbook on Corruption in Higher Education, 2025, pp 98-116 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This study examines peer review in the age of misinformation. It explores internal, external, and parallel factors that compromise the perceived integrity of review processes. The chapter begins with a brief historical overview before turning to internal threats that exist from within disciplines. It then turns to external threats in the form of university audit culture and predatory journals. The chapter closes with a discussion of parallel factors like think tank research quality that have implications for academic research. Collectively, these factors signal a need for further research on multidimensional challenges facing peer review.
