The global food predicament: insights into overcoming the capitalist structures and dynamics

Arpita Bisht, Arpita Bisht and Arpita Bisht

Chapter Chapter 13 in Dialogues for Degrowth, 2025, pp 167-182 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter presents a comprehensive look at the major theoretical perspectives which relate to the current globalised and neoliberal world food systems. The chapter take broad look at the historical dynamics of world food production, trade and distribution and how these continue-albeit in modified forms and languages, in the current world. The chapter discusses the colonial, neocolonial, neoimperialistic, and neoliberal policies which have shaped and continue to shape how we produce, exchange and consume food. The chapter also provides readers with a broad overview of the food regimes framework-an important critical framework with which to understand modern food systems. Albeit, in a very limited manner, the chapter also discussed the beyond material dimensions of food-its essential role in culture, in festivals, in clothing, in medicinal uses, in indigenous and traditional cultural practices, and how food use is a skill-set and set of knowledge transferred from generation to generation across different parts of the world. These issues are raised and highlighted because, I believe these historical and foundational dynamics are essential if degrowth or postgrowth are to seriously engage with issues around food. in the absence of inclusion of these foundational underlying processes, there is a great risk-as the third food regime shows, that ‘solutions’ could result in further entrenchment of oppressive ‘new’ food use patterns across the world.
