Giovanni Ziccardi
Chapter 1 in Legal Informatics, 2025, pp 2-58 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Abstract: Legal informatics plays a crucial role in modern legal practice, research and education. As a scientific discipline, it bridges law and technology, facilitating the efficiency of legal processes, access to justice and the automation of legal services. This first chapter explores its academic and research dimensions, highlighting the traditional division between ‘legal informatics’ and ‘ICT law’. It examines key contributions by several scholars, the impact of legal databases such as LexisNexis and Westlaw and the transformation brought about by e-filing systems. The chapter also considers the role of legal informatics in the ‘sensor society’, its implications for data protection and emerging technologies such as machine learning and AI-driven decision-making in legal contexts. Finally, it considers the integration of legal informatics into education, emphasizing the need for digital literacy for legal professionals in the modern era.
