Abstract: The purpose of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive introduction to the Research Handbook of FinTech by establishing the thematic foundations, contextual background and overall scope of this edited volume. This chapter positions and highlights fintech within its broader evolutionary trajectory by identifying the main vectors of change and the key pressure points that emerge from its inherently multidisciplinary nature. Particular emphasis is placed to the intersectional dynamics shaped by emerging technologies in the context of financial innovation and digital finance. This chapter seeks to narrate the story and conceptual framework of the Research Handbook of FinTech, presenting its central themes, while illustrating the complex, multifaceted and nuanced perspectives that arise from the palette of the collection's novel, insightful and thought-provoking contributions. Ultimately, this chapter aspires to draw attention to the intellectual rigor, analytical depth and epistemological foundations behind digital finance/fintech, while orchestrating a constructive dialogue between the past, the present and the future of fintech as a global phenomenon, marked by crucial questions still seeking answers.
