The aesthetical perspective of post-Schumpeterian innovations

Michał Szostak

Chapter 9 in Handbook on Post-Schumpeterian Innovations, 2025, pp 149-166 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Following the ethical aspect of post-Schumpeterian innovations focused on the value of Good and extending it by adding the other values of Plato's Triad (Truth and Beauty), aesthetical considerations of innovation may be undertaken and called the aesthetics of innovation process management. This perspective involves understanding how the aesthetic dimensions of management contribute to and shape innovations. To explore post-Schumpeterian innovations through the lens of management aesthetics, we can consider: 1) embracing ambiguity and creativity arising from the convergence of diverse disciplines and technologies within an organisation, allowing individuals to explore unconventional ideas; 2) emphasising the sensory experiences of innovation recipients and innovation (co-)creators, encouraging cross-disciplinary collaborations to spark new perspectives by incorporating symbolic representations shaping to communicate universal values related to innovations, including, a) valuing aesthetic experiences by recognising them in driving innovation and encouraging innovators to seek inspirations stimulating creativity, and b) measuring and reflecting on aesthetic outcomes by developing metrics to evaluate the impact of management aesthetics on innovation initiatives; 3) addressing ethical-aesthetical considerations in decision-making; and 4) focussing on experiential learning through direct engagement and incorporating improvisation by developing adaptive and resilient practices and encouraging agile practices to respond to changing circumstances.
