Introduction to the Handbook on Economic Growth and the Environment
Jungho Baek
A chapter in Handbook on Economic Growth and the Environment, 2026, pp 1-10 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This handbook addresses the fundamental challenge of aligning economic growth with environmental sustainability in the twenty-first century. It explores how economies across varying contexts are navigating the ecological constraints of growth through institutional, technological, and policy innovations. Organized into four thematic parts, the volume synthesizes theoretical insights, empirical evidence, and case studies to examine the environmental impacts of growth, pathways to decarbonization, fiscal and regulatory tools for sustainable development, and regional and sectoral responses to ecological stress. Bridging debates between green growth and post-growth paradigms, the handbook emphasizes the importance of institutional capacity, distributive justice, and policy integration in managing trade-offs and accelerating sustainability transitions. The collection underscores that sustainable economic growth is not automatic but requires deliberate, evidence-based, and inclusive strategies grounded in governance, innovation, and equity.
