Carbon emissions and drivers in China's textile industry: evidence from the eastern region

Abstract: The Chinese government has committed to reaching peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. As one of the major contributors to global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, China's manufacturing sector plays a significant role, with the textile industry being a key component. The study in this chapter uses the input-output model to classify industries linked to textiles and calculates indirect CO2 emissions from textile demand, based on direct emissions from primary energy consumption. The Impact = Population · Affluence · Technology (IPAT) model assesses the relationship between population density, economic development, technological level, and CO2 emissions in the textile sector. Findings indicate that Sichuan, Shandong, Guangdong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang provinces are the largest CO2 sources, primarily using raw coal, natural gas, and diesel, with affluence being a key driver of emissions.
