What is conscience?
Susan Stedman Jones
Chapter 21 in The Elgar Companion to Émile Durkheim, 2026, pp 367-384 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter concerns the centrality of the concept of conscience to Durkheim's major works and examines the neglect of this in sociological commentaries. First, it shows that this neglect is tied to accusations made against his thought. Second, it shows this concept is central to his philosophical language, which accommodates consciousness and agency. Third, it locates the philosophical origin of this language in Renouvier's rationalism and “Neo-Criticisme.”
