Chapter 1 in Islamic Finance in the Digital Age, 2024, pp 1-7 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This introduction highlights the evolving landscape of Islamic finance in the digital age, emphasizing the transformative impact of digitalization and global interconnectedness on the financial sector. It underscores the growth and resilience of Islamic finance, especially in the face of the global pandemic, and the sector’s evolution towards Shariah-compliant alternatives with a focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors. The emergence of Islamic fintech, despite its significant growth in OIC countries, is noted as having untapped potential. The need for a maqasid-centric vision for the next decade in Islamic finance is emphasized, urging conscious adoption of emerging technologies with Islamic values. This book is derived from the 5th International Conference on Islamic Finance (ICIF), which was held on October 2022, covering envisioning the next decade, emerging technologies and Shariah-compliance issues, and emerging Islamic finance solutions and opportunities. The overall theme of the book is the integration of technology and Islamic finance, offering a forward-looking vision for the industry.
