Multiple professionalisms in childcare 0–3: the case of Barcelona

Abstract:
Post-industrial transformations leading to tertiarisation and feminisation of work have led to a political change favouring the expansion of early childhood education and care (ECEC) within the Social Investment paradigm. ECEC is considered to facilitate women's participation in the labour market, thus reducing the risk of poverty and gender inequalities, and to improve children's social and cognitive development to facilitate society's productivity in the knowledge economy. In this context, ECEC services have also diversified into different provision models (public, private for-profit and non-profit, social innovative initiatives), with different degrees of institutionalisation and different pedagogical projects. This has led to different professionalisms and professionalisation processes not always being congruent with the guild-like model, which is typically followed by stronger professional groups. Here, we analyse these processes in the city of Barcelona, the challenges they pose and their interactions with ECEC public policy.
