Intersectional perspectives on young people's transitions from out-of-home care

Rajendra Rambajue and Christopher D. O’Connor

Chapter 22 in Handbook on Intersectionality and Social Work, 2026, pp 293-304 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores youth transition from out-of-home care. Child welfare youth transitioning from out-of-home care are a diverse population who often experience challenges and poor outcomes in multiple life domains. Social work literature from Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States has consistently shown evidence of poor outcomes for youth who transitioned from out-of-home care (also known as care leavers). Using Canadian data obtained from semi-structured interviews with care leavers 19–27 years old, this chapter presents care leavers’ lived experiences through the lens of intersectionality theory to offer intersectional perspectives on youth transition from out-of-home care. We argue that an intersectional perspective can enhance understandings of the multidimensional disadvantages of youth who transitioned from out-of-home care.
