Taking account of inequalities and intersectionality in later life: critical gerontological social work and the lifecourse

Abstract: This chapter adopts a lifecourse perspective to make visible the links between social and structural inequalities and later life health outcomes, and it illuminates the role played by intersectionality. Inequalities in health arise because of inequalities in the conditions of daily life and the fundamental drivers that give rise to them: differential access to power, money, education, opportunities, and resources. Central to the core argument in this chapter is the view that it is important that social workers working with older people adopt a critical gerontological lens. Critical gerontological social work offers a route into bringing together analysis at the micro level of the older person, such as living alone, with that relating to macro structural issues, such as disadvantage and discrimination. Drawing on recent evidence from the ‘Social Work with Older People’ project, the role of social work that is informed by critical gerontology is highlighted.
