Chapter 2 in Handbook on Intersectionality and Social Work, 2026, pp 27-38 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores how the law and policies in relation to children in need of support and protection shape social work practices from an intersectional frame. Using intersectionality as a tool for analysis, a child and family's ‘journey’ from family support through the child protection process, the family courts, and options for out-of-home care is critically examined. The impact of wider social policies on children and their families, such as welfare benefits, youth services, and immigration policies will be outlined to situate subsequent analyses. The final section will examine the various options for children unable to live with their birth parents, including the use of kinship care and adoption, drawing on a range of research from the UK and internationally that explores the role and importance of kin in different communities and complex issues for identity development faced by children permanently separated from their birth families.
