Towards an intersectional approach to social work pedagogy and learning

Abstract: This chapter will examine intersectionality as a critical component of social work education and offer strategies about how social work educators might incorporate intersectionality into their taught and practice curriculums, drawing upon Grant and Zwier's (2011) intersectionally aware teacher identity framework. Social work educators must respect, recognise, and acknowledge learners’ identities and experiences when developing modules, courses, and programmes that are aimed at producing intersectionally aware social work practitioners. Social work pedagogy must be contemporary, relevant, and critical if social workers are to contribute to social change, equality, and social justice in the twenty-first century and beyond. In particular, the chapter will explore the following areas: teaching intersectional theory in the social work classroom; assessing the application of intersectional knowledge in coursework; embedding intersectional pedagogy into practice placements and within supervision; intersectional pedagogy in continuing professional development.
