Animals and food production from a United States perspective

Jessica Chapman

Chapter 14 in Research Handbook on Animal Law and Animal Rights, 2025, pp 260-284 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The United States’ animal agriculture is a complex system that has revolutionized animal food production, but at the cost of animals and humans who are involved in, or impacted by, its processes. This chapter will survey animal agriculture in the United States. Specifically, it will discuss common practices used on farmed animals to increase corporate efficiency and revenue through agricultural industrialization, and it will discuss the welfare concerns that arise because of these husbandry methods. The chapter will then discuss the United States’ federal, state, and territorial agencies and laws that regulate animal agriculture throughout the country. Finally, it will discuss some methods advocates employ to challenge agencies’ lack of enforcement of protection laws, as well as strategies to hold corporations accountable for the inhumane treatment of the animals in their possession.
