Abstract:
While China has a good relationship with Russia, Japan’s relationship with Russia has only improved during the last decade, mainly with the aim to solve the ongoing problems with Russia, that is, the territorial disputes and a bilateral peace treaty formally ending World War II (WWII). With its turning towards Russia, Japan places some stress on the already tense relationship with China, while China has been more and more open to other possibilities than Russia because of its emerging economy status. The Russia-Ukraine war since February 2022 has been fueling international dynamics and has brought more tension to the Asia Pacific region. To understand these dynamics better, this chapter takes a look at the development of the relationships between Russia and, respectively, China and Japan, before and after the onset of the war and it considers the ramifications for the relationship between China and Japan.
