Betting on entrepreneurship to create the future

Thomas S. Lyons ()

Chapter 5 in Rethinking Community Economic Development, 2025, pp 56-76 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter makes the case for entrepreneurship, both commercial and social, to be the vehicle for driving the transformations required to fulfill the promise of community economic development. It begins by addressing the primary criticisms of entrepreneurship and approaches that use entrepreneurship as a tool for economic development. It then defines the terms ‘entrepreneurship’ and ‘entrepreneurs’ and enumerates their many attributes. The cognitive and behavioral characteristics of entrepreneurs are explored, and the role entrepreneurship plays in both the economy and society is considered. Finally, recommendations are made for ways in which community economic developers can support the work of entrepreneurs.
