Educating entrepreneurs and developing the workforce
Thomas S. Lyons ()
Chapter 6 in Rethinking Community Economic Development, 2025, pp 77-93 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter asks the reader to consider the development of entrepreneurship skills as a crucial element of workforce development. It is argued that these capabilities are the skills of leadership in uncertain times and situations. It is also asserted that technical skills are necessary, but insufficient for coping effectively with the challenges of the twenty-first century. The research-based essential skills of successful entrepreneurship are enumerated, and a tool for the clinical assessment of these skills is presented. Coaching is advocated as the most effective approach to developing entrepreneurship skills. The chapter concludes with suggestions for building entrepreneurship skill development into workforce development efforts.
