Toward sustainable ocean governance: research for inclusive and equitable development in Indonesia

Umi Muawanah, Zamroni Salim and Agus Eko Nugroho

Chapter 18 in A Research Agenda for Sustainable Ocean Governance, 2025, pp 215-228 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Indonesia is committed to achieving sustainable marine conservation and developing a thriving blue economy by 2045. This effort involves protecting 30 percent of its marine areas, implementing good governance practices, and fostering international collaboration. Sustainable ocean governance is a crucial and evolving field of research, essential for addressing the complex challenges related to marine environmental stability and the flow of sustainable socio-economic benefits. It requires an interdisciplinary approach that integrates geopolitical, scientific, technological, and economic perspectives. Current research on Indonesia's blue economy, ocean governance, and sustainable development highlights significant gaps, particularly in the scope and depth of analysis, to better understand the real-world problems associated with marine resource utilization. It underscores the importance of understanding the interactions and conflicts among policies, natural resource conditions, economic activities, and external factors such as climate change and geopolitics.
