Abstract: This chapter seeks to move beyond the traditional view of the expatriate family as merely an antecedent to expatriate adjustment and performance. Instead, it uncovers what is currently known about expatriate families from a family-centric perspective, the intellectual foundations of this knowledge, and ways to advance our insights into those inherently connected to and invariably impacted by global mobility. Through a bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer, this chapter adopts an inclusive definition of family that reflects societal changes, examining the experiences of expatriate families across different modes of mobility and diverse expatriate communities. It proposes four key research directions: further family-centric focus; exploring contemporary and often unaccompanied forms of global mobility; examining dual-career expatriate families; and addressing the diverse contexts of modern-day expatriation. Implications for organisations include drawing on insights from diverse expatriate communities to shape inclusive support systems for expatriate families, regardless of their mode of global mobility or family structure.
