Chapter 4 in The Authoritative Research Guide to Expatriates, 2025, pp 86-125 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Employers and countries strive to present themselves as desirable places to work in order to attract expatriates who are often in a powerful position to choose the most favourable destination country. Despite the significance of destination countries’ competitiveness in attracting global talent, research often neglects the influence of a location's attractiveness on individuals. Expatriates consider various factors when choosing locations abroad. This systematic literature review categorises the determinants of expatriates’ location choices at the individual, organisational, and institutional levels. Using a person–location fit framework, the chapter explores the alignment of expatriates’ capabilities and preferences with the requirements and offerings of organisations and destinations. Identified gaps in the literature on location choice factors, especially at the organisational level, and practical implications are provided to help employers and destinations support expatriates, identify preferred destinations, and enhance their career success and integration in chosen locations. Finally, areas for future research are explored.
