A conceptual framework to understand the implementation of innovation on construction projects

Abstract: Innovation is taken as one of the effective leverages that can increase the productivity of construction firms and the construction industry in general. With an understanding of the industry and production settings in construction, this chapter attempts to dig into the classical conceptual aspects of the processes that inform the probable behavior of and the interactions among relevant parties during the implementation of innovation on construction projects. An aggregated generic conceptual framework has been developed that can be applied to capture a possible spectrum of different construction innovation cases. The concepts of motivation alignment, integration, and their influence on the success of innovation are incorporated in the framework. The framework represents a sequential model of the implementation of innovation (from initiation to the realization of results) on construction projects. The framework can be further tested as an overarching model with ex-post data from any innovative attempt.
