Abstract: This chapter provides an introduction to the study of inequality and its relationship with natural resources. The role of inequality in economic development has gained increasing attention and importance in the twenty-first century. Societies must take fair steps to keep inequality, in all its forms from diminishing broad societal welfare. Substantial natural resource endowments within a region or country on the whole appears to make both initiating and implementing those steps more difficult, inequality being the true “Resource Curse.” The introduction summarizes the 15 chapters in this Companion that investigate various linkages between inequality and natural resources and concludes that the examination is far from complete, urging additional study on the topic informed by the advances contained in these chapters.
