Firm-level export dynamics
James Tybout
Chapter 16 in Elgar Encyclopedia of International Trade, 2026, pp 76-78 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Much of the literature on export dynamics has focused on the underlying microeconomic forces that drive firms’ decisions concerning when, where, and how much to ship abroad. This survey takes stock of what has been learned. It focuses on the empirical evidence concerning four types of frictions that condition firms’ responses to shocks: beachhead sunk costs, search frictions, learning frictions, and costly factor accumulation. The main message is that all of these export impediments play a significant role, but little is known about their relative importance in shaping aggregate export dynamics.
