Global varieties of capitalism: the future or no future?

Michael A. Witt

Chapter 23 in Handbook of Comparative Political Economy, 2025, pp 411-432 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter reviews the current state of knowledge about global varieties of capitalism and explores possible paths forward. It finds that much work remains to be done and concludes that the next steps would require a major commitment from the field in terms of time, resources, and efforts to establish a pool of global data with construct validity. While this investment might lead to an overarching theory of global varieties of capitalism, its main benefit would arguably be to provide the social sciences more generally with data for exploring the interaction of institutions and organizations in an international comparative perspective.
