Assembling green finance: using assemblage approaches to study the merging of environment and finance

Bregje van Veelen

Chapter 5 in Handbook on Financialisation and Space, 2026, pp 61-74 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter I explore what assemblage approaches can offer for the study of finance, and its connection with environment and space. I argue that the strength of assemblage approaches lies in their focus on unpacking the ‘black box’ of financialisation, centring the question of how financial flows are accomplished. Secondly, and in relation to the focus on financial flows, I also show how assemblage approaches seek to shift away from financialisation as a universalising process, instead emphasising the ways in which local (human and non-human) actors and conditions actively shape the form and direction of financial flows. Finally, through a focus on the ‘work’ required to make finance flow, I argue that assemblage approaches can offer insights into how financial and spatial relations are reproduced, but also where the opportunities for change might lie. I include examples from green bonds as well as (farm)land investment to illustrate these arguments.
