Bridging theory and praxis: the legacy of Heidi Hartmann

Deborah M. Figart and Ellen Mutari

Chapter 11 in The Elgar Companion to Women and Heterodox Economics, 2025, pp 171-185 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The work of Heidi I. Hartmann, over her long career, plays a critical and illustrative role in the emergence of Feminist Political Economy theory and praxis. Hartmann's influential theoretical work early in her career articulated the beginnings of a pluralist and intersectional approach, laying the groundwork for contemporary developments within heterodox economics. Notably, in the second part of her career, she was recognized for building the Institute for Women's Policy Research, a think tank that uses empirical research to lift women's voices. IWPR's research supports public policy interventions to address the unequal distribution of time and resources that Hartmann had identified as perpetuating women's economic disadvantage in her early theoretical writing. Her contributions provide a lens for examining the origins of feminist critiques of economic theories, the importance of intersectional economic analysis, and the ways that economic research can contribute to meaningful change through progressive public policy.
