Reflections about the state and development strategies in peripheral capitalism

Abstract: The role of the state in driving transformation within peripheral economies is widely acknowledged in the literature on development economics. However, economic development theories have not generally been oriented to the study of the state. Various contributions have focused on the actions that states must take to achieve certain development objectives, regardless of the particularities that characterize states in the periphery and the eventual capacity they may have to do so. This chapter presents my analytical perspective that seeks to critically examine the challenges associated with state intervention in peripheral development processes. Situated within the framework of the political economy of capitalism, this perspective emphasizes understanding the power dynamics and conflicts inherent in the system of centre–periphery relationships and within the latter, which shape and potentially constrain state actions in pursuing development strategies.
